Mainz History Talks

World history in Mainz - these are the Mainz History Talks. The generous funding provided by the DFG for the Gutenberg International Conference Center [GICC] makes it possible to open up new perspectives on the Europe's history in order to see Europe's present in a new light.

The Mainz History Talks are structured in two thematic series:

1) The Mainz Symposia on Medieval and Byzantine Research which concentrates on the birth of the continent in the Middle Ages and on the history of Byzantine as a bridge between Europe and Asia and between ancient and modern times.

2) The Global Europe Symposia on Europe's Global Impact, where experts from all over the world discuss one of the central questions of European self-understanding in the 21st century: the significance of the "global history of European expansion" in the present. What has Europe brought to the world - and what has it taken away from it?

Our mission is to contribute to more reflective European self-concepts by making a deeper understanding of Europe’s history from global perspectives possible.
