Europe's Global Impact

October 7th - 10th, 2020, Mainz

Whenever migration from Africa or Asia to Europe or the restitution of cultural assets from European museums is debated, the question of Europe's historical guilt always comes up. Post-colonial critics see Europe's relationship to other parts of the world as marked by racism and oppression, expropriation and humiliation. This is countered by the notion of "Western values" and "Western civilization", which, despite all the shortcomings in their implementation, have contributed to humanitarian progress and set global standards of human rights and democracy. Having this in mind, the conference "Europe's Global Impact" states the question whether it is possible to review and to analyze the impact that Europe had on a global scale without just sweepingly concluding that both aspects apply? Can we try to look beyond?
